April 20 – Today We Hit The Highest Elevation On This Trip

Entering NebraskaToday Hit The Highest Elevation Experienced During Our entire Trip across the USA. How high? 8640 feet. 5280 Feet is ONE MILE so this is 1.64 miles up in the air! Thin air!

I swear I am not trying to dwell on negative thoughts but I think the elevation is eating my brain cells or at least the good mood ones.
Slept like crap, left the hotel fairly early, did not even bother with breakfast and headed east out of town.
Literally the second we got to the edge of town on the interstate, we saw a semi sitting on its side, perfectly straight, like it was simply tipped over. Seeing something like that does not build one’s confidence in what is coming up ahead. A wind gust must have blown the entire rig over, as there were no signs of a crash.

I drove too far today. I don’t even remember stopping for lunch. I do remember enjoying an ice-cream in Little America WY, after gassing up. Of course purchased some postcards. The extent of my on road buying is postcards and magnets. Once we figure out where we want to live after this incessant traveling, I would like to wallpaper a wall with the postcards and be surrounded by all our memories, but hopefully there are thousands more postcards to purchase before that happens.
Hey, walls are big and I need to make sure I have enough.
We passed the Continental Divide today. That was interesting learning about it.
I pushed myself miles farther than normal because I needed desperately to get out of the mountains and spend the night where breathing was not labored.
I finally said, “enough” and we decided to stay the night in North Platte NE. Yes, we are in Nebraska.
Happily elevation is only 2802’, ate dinner at Ruby Tuesday, drove through the town a little then headed back to La Quinta for get some much needed sleep.
We did happen to see “Fort Cody” on the way to the hotel, and being that is my son’s name, we will visiting it tomorrow.
The hotel is very nice and comfortable. You can’t go wrong in staying here.
